I am a pediatrician, and I absolutely love what I do. Working with children and families, helping to keep children healthy and making them feel better is the best job I could have imagined. Being a doctor is something I have wanted to do for most of my life. But at one point, as most young children do, I too dreamed of being an actor on TV.
Recently, I got a chance to be an actor for a day. It makes me think of that line from a TV commercial, “I am not a real doctor, but I get to play one on TV.” Well, I AM a real doctor, and I did get to play one on TV!
In the new Kohl’s Cares Grow Safe & Healthy commercial, I get to introduce this adorable little guy named Spriggy. He is a fun, bumbling little character. I love Spriggy, and my children love him too!
As a pediatrician for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, I am very familiar with the Kohl’s Cares Grow Safe & Healthy program, and the great safety resources it offers. I talk about it with my patients and parents. At home, we play the Keep Spriggy Safe app all the time. So when I was approached to do this commercial, I was more than happy to help.
It was such a fun experience
Admittedly, I was a little nervous, but everyone made it so easy. Honestly, I had no idea what goes into producing a commercial spot for TV. This 30-second commercial took almost eight hours of shooting on the set. That doesn’t include all the behind the scenes work beforehand, and the animating and editing work done after. It is amazing just thinking about it all when I see the finished commercial on TV.
Working and interacting with a computer-animated Spriggy was actually quite difficult, but it was a lot of fun. When we recorded my part of the commercial, Spriggy was a stuffed stand-in, so I had to do a lot of pretending. The crew was so helpful in prompting me to react in just the right way.
I still love my day job
While it was fun for a day, I still love my own day job as a pediatrician helping children and families at Franklin Pediatrics. I encourage you to check out the website at KohlsSafeandHealthy.com for important safety tips and information. Let’s all help keep Spriggy and our kids safe!
